Allentown, Pa… Every year on the Saturday night before Easter Sunday, the members of Grace Episcopal Church, at the corner of 5th and Linden Streets, gather around a blazing bonfire to light the paschal candle that leads them from the night’s darkness into their church to celebrate the Great Vigil of Easter. The congregation knows that every year the paschal fire strikes fear into their neighbors. No matter that there is a permit. No matter that the fire marshal is standing next to the seven-foot-high flames. No matter the reassuring presence of a ladder truck. A fire in the city is an awesome and fear-provoking sight. It could jump its bounds.
