[From Mother Laura Howell] Join us on Sunday, October 4th at 4 p.m. (following the Blessing of the Animals) for an organ recital played by Trinity's organist Timothy Smith. This will be Tim's first recital in Bethlehem since coming to Trinity last February. He will perform music of Bach, the monumental B-Minor Prelude and Fugue; Mendelssohn, the First Organ Sonata; Gigout, Grand Chorus Dialogue, which pits the organ's trumpets against the full ensemble. Also on the program will be several short pieces including works by by jazz pianist George Shearing, Robert Elmore and Dale Wood plus a beautiful Psalm Prelude by English composer Herbert Howells. A reception will follow the program so please join us and bring a friend, or two!
Bio of Dr. Timothy Smith
Timothy Smith began his work as Director of Music & Organist at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in February of 2009. Prior to this position, he served for 17 years as Director of Music & Organist at New York's famed Riverside Church, and three years on the music staff of Trinity Church, Wall Street. A graduate of Yale University, Smith holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Manhattan School of Music. His organ studies have been with W. Lindsay Smith, Thomas Murray, and John Walker. He is the recipient of the Theodore Presser Award and the Harry Benjamin Jepson Award from Yale, and the Clair Cocci Award from The Manhattan School. He has performed as organist with the Yale Philharmonia, the Manhattan School of Music Symphony Orchestra, the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, the Fairfield Chamber Orchestra and Period Academy, and most recently, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He was appointed University Organist at Columbia University in November of 2000 and still holds that position, performing regularly in the University's historic St. Paul's Chapel.
Together with conductor James Simms and the Choir of Trinity Church, he has recorded the Organ and Choral Works of Larry King, former Director of Music at Trinity, Volume 5 of the series, Music from Trinity
Church, Wall Street (Gothic Records). Smith served as a contributing author for The Hymnal, 1982, Companion, Volume II, which was published by the Church Hymnal Corporation. Dr. Smith and the
Riverside Organ were featured in the Great Organs of New York, (J&B Records) an anthology of organists and their instruments throughout New York City. Together with the American Boy Choir and the St. Thomas Choir (Fifth Avenue), he and The Riverside Choir can be heard with soprano Jessye Norman on her Christmas album, In the Spirit. While at Riverside, Smith recorded four solo discs with the JAV and Pro Organo labels. His On a Summer's Evening, a live recording from The Riverside Church, was praised in the American Record Guide as glorious, superb playing, and impressive. He also led The Riverside Choir in four choral discs, also on the JAV label.
As a recitalist, Smith has performed in some of the most beautiful and historic houses of worship in this country and abroad, including the cathedrals at Chartres, Beauvais, Notre-Dame, and the Church of St. Germain-des-Prez in France; as well as Lincoln and Wells Cathedrals in Great Britain. He was also a featured soloist at the Cardiff Organ Festival in Wales.

Dr. Timothy Smith! What an impressive career you've had. It's lovely to see your name in print...you popped into my head today and I googled you! Glad to have found you and to have read about your life. :) I have such fond memories of our trip to Germany with the choir, back in the 80s. Love to you, Marne D.
