It is amazing to me that you can make such decisions outside of the context of what the bishop-elect has written or said. Were you present when he asked his bishop's permission to proceed with his liturgical writings? What was the heart of those conversations for you? Were you a part of the struggle with what it means to test the boundaries of liturgical theology? Where did you acquire all of the information necessary to really understand the context of the writings of Thew-Forrester? From the internet or from the good Christians of Northern Michigan who elected Thew-Forrester?

If this type of scrutiny is applied to every episcopal election from here forward, there will never again be a prophetic bishop in The Episcopal Church.

What a sad day for our church.

I also appreciate your articulation deeply. As a former member both of your diocese (1972-75), and the Diocese of Northern Michigan (1986-1994), I feel so torn. I feel very supportive of the Dio of N MI because it has made a huge contribution in my life, and I think in the life of the church (thanks be to Wes Frensdorff and Jim Kelsey, God rest their souls, and to Tom Ray). Much of what is "broke" about the way we do the episcopate is addressed in what N MI has done. But your articulation of your theological concerns is excellent. thank you.

Thank you, Standing Committee of the Diocese of Bethlehem for your hard work in coming to this decision. Yours was the most articulate rationale I have seen by any Standing Comittee for your decision to withold consent. It also demonstrated a great deal of Christian compassion while holding faith to the truths of the faith. God bless you all.
